An $860,000 federal investment is strengthening Francophone and bilingual communities across Canada's Northwest Territories — opening new doors for French-speaking newcomers to settle, work, and thrive far beyond the major urban centres.

The Government of Canada and the Northwest Territories have announced a powerful new partnership — a joint investment of approximately $860,000 under the Francophone Immigration Support Program to attract, retain, and support Francophone and bilingual newcomers across the Northwest Territories.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment between the federal government and the Northwest Territories to strengthen Francophone communities across the North — recognising that French-speaking immigrants are a vital and growing part of Canada's cultural, economic, and social fabric, especially in regions that need new talent to sustain their communities.

"The vitality of our Francophone communities sets us apart as a country. Investing in people. Strengthening communities."

Five Goals This Project Will Achieve

The $860,000 investment will fund a comprehensive project designed to address the full journey of Francophone and bilingual newcomers — from awareness and arrival to settlement, credential recognition, and long-term community integration:

01

Improve Access to Information

Helping Francophone and bilingual newcomers find clear, accessible information on immigration services and resources.

02

Raise Awareness of Immigration Programs

Promoting the Northwest Territories Nominee Program and other federal programs to attract qualified Francophone talent.

03

Support Recognition of Foreign Credentials

Helping temporary residents get their skills recognized and reach their full potential in the Northwest Territories.

04

Strengthen Employer Involvement

Encouraging employers, especially in communities outside Yellowknife, to take an active role in the immigration process.

05

Build Stronger Communities

Supporting Francophone and bilingual immigrants to settle permanently and build a bright future in their communities.

Why the Northwest Territories Needs Francophone Newcomers

The Northwest Territories faces unique demographic and economic challenges — a vast geography, a small population, and a growing demand for skilled workers across key sectors. Francophone communities in the NWT have long been a cornerstone of the territory's identity and economy, and attracting new French-speaking immigrants is essential to ensuring their continued vitality.

This investment recognises that immigration to Canada is not just about settling in Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal. Communities across the North — from Yellowknife to smaller remote communities — need skilled, committed newcomers who can contribute to local economies and strengthen the social fabric of these regions.

French-speaking immigrants contribute to the strength and prosperity of the Northwest Territories. Expanding services outside Yellowknife removes barriers and helps newcomers live, work and thrive — building strong local economies and vibrant, diverse communities across the territory.

What This Means for Francophone and Bilingual Immigrants

For French-speaking immigrants and bilingual newcomers considering Canada as their home, this investment opens up an often-overlooked but genuinely exciting option — the Northwest Territories. With strong community support, targeted settlement services, active employer involvement, and a clear pathway through the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP), the North offers a welcoming and opportunity-rich environment for those willing to explore beyond the major cities.

Credential recognition support — one of the five key goals of this project — is particularly significant. Many skilled immigrants arrive in Canada to find that their foreign qualifications are not automatically recognised, limiting their ability to work in their chosen field. This initiative will directly address that barrier for Francophone newcomers in the NWT.

Northwest Territories Nominee Program

The NTNP is the primary pathway for skilled workers, including Francophone and bilingual immigrants, to obtain permanent residence in the Northwest Territories.

This investment will actively promote the NTNP to Francophone talent across Canada and internationally — helping to fill critical labour gaps in the territory and grow its Francophone communities.

Employers Outside Yellowknife

A key focus of this initiative is engaging employers in smaller communities across the NWT — not just the capital Yellowknife. This is critical to distributing immigration benefits and economic growth across the entire territory.

By encouraging employers to actively participate in immigration, the project creates direct job opportunities for incoming Francophone newcomers in communities that need them most.

A Shared Commitment — Three Ministers, One Vision

This initiative reflects the commitment of three ministers from different levels and portfolios of government — a rare and powerful demonstration of how Canada's federal and territorial governments can align to achieve meaningful outcomes for Francophone communities and newcomers alike.
